Now Twitter, it has to be said, isnt for everyone. Its primary aim was to provide a simple platform where a simple string of text, 140 characters long, could be quickly sent and received; these communications being known as tweets, obviously.
Since the tweet was very limited, in the number of words that could be sent, it soon developed its own shorthand language. So unless you were with it then reading or sending a tweet could be like reading a foreign language. However Twitters potential as a marketing tool was soon noticed by the professional marketers and in spite of its limited amount of text that could be sent, it was soon being adapted for the internet market place.
I wont go into the detail of how Twitter actually works because that would require numerous pages, basically Twitter works around a time line which is displayed on a single page thats updated constantly. You as a member of Twitter can add your own personal message to the timeline and this is known as a tweet.
As you send and receive tweets you build a list of followers and here is where the professional marketer has latched onto a goldmine of information. Anywhere where you increase your marketing list, especially on autopilot, has to be worth the investment of time.
This however is where the wheat is sorted from the chaff. Twitter requires constant updates, usually at least several times a day. So are you prepared to spend the time updating your tweets on your Twitter account? Is the return on investment worth it?
Well these are questions that only you as a marketer can answer. Before you dismiss Twitter as a novelty or as too much work let’s stand back and see how this social media platform can be best utilized.
You could tweet to all and sundry and have a nice warm fuzzy feeling inside that you have hundreds if not thousands of followers who are eventually going to spend money with you; in your dreams.
So what use is Twitter? Well lets stand back and look at the bigger picture. What exactly does Twitter do that other social platforms dont? Therein lies Twitters true potential.
Twitter allows you to communicate either on mass or on an individual basis both with the potential to be used virally. This means you can send out a tweet to an interested group, your followers, who in turn will pass it on to their followers or you can send a tweet to an individual business contact (think JV partner or affiliate) who in turn can focus the tweet to their selected market.
All of a sudden you are doing focussed viral marketing; this could be special offers to hot prospects or even being the recipient of such offers, the list of possiblities is endless.
As mentioned earlier, if you intend to capitalize on Twitter and play the numbers game, then there are some dos and dont that you will need to adhere to. Nothing too onerous, just making sure that when you set up your account you get your profile right would be a good start. There are a lot of tools available nowadays for use with your Twitter account and we will discuss some of the better ones in another article.
So dont dismiss Twitter as a fad, instead see it for what it really is, a fantastic opportunity for JVs, building your list and getting your name and business out there on the web.
Two final words of caution. First, DO NOT EVER SEND SPAM and secondly it doesnt matter how many followers you have, try to be selective of those you’re following. Only link up with people who are genuinely interested in your content or the line of product that you propose to sell. Anything else is a waste of your precious time and energy.
An inflated followers list never made anyone rich.
Basically you’re better off connecting with smaller groups and building strong relationships with the people in that group. In this way your social influence will grow naturally to the point where your list will explode.
